Wet Friday & Saturday; Improving Sunday

The promised wet day materialized for just about everyone and many of us are already crying uncle. But the deep tropical moisture and favorable upper air conditions will be with us for another two days. The good news is that we’ve seen the worst of it - some parts of the Southshore and the Hammond area received over 3” today alone. The other piece of good news: Highs will remain in the 80s through Saturday.

Sunday should see much improvement with upper air conditions switching around. The spigot should be turned off until late Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday when rain chances inch upward. Then, we’ll be in for some drier but continued seasonably hot weather.

The Foreca graphic highlights the wet weather tomorrow and Saturday. Though probabilities are still high, amounts should fall off since the amount of time that it will rain will be less. Tomorrow, I expect showers in the morning, then breaking mid-day and perhaps another round later in the day especially in inland areas. On Saturday, we should see even more sun. Sunday should be a better day, with lower rain chance, but i can’t dismiss a few, brief showers along the immediate Mississippi Gulf Coast, perhaps part of Slidell, and the Southshore.

Monday looks dry but with highs climbing to about 90. The Weather Service is going closer to 95, but I disagree — too much wet ground with the sun’s energy having to go towards evaporation.

Next chance of rain late Tuesday and Wednesday but conditions don’t appear quite as favorable. So, I’m thinking that totals will be lower and inland areas may not see anything. Then, we’re back to mostly sunny weather with highs near 90 for the rest of the week. That’s typical for September.

Models continue to show a cold front moving through our area, but have delayed its arrival a few days until Sept. 22 or 23. Fingers crossed for a few nice sunny days after the front’s passage with highs in the 83-85 degree range and lows in the upper 60s. It’s almost enough for me to break out my Penn State t-shirts.

Tropics are forecast to remain quiet for the next week. Several areas will bear watching about 10 days to two weeks from now. One is in the far Eastern Atlantic and we won’t have to be concerned about that one. The other will be off the East Coast of Florida, or perhaps the Gulf. We’ll keep you appraised.
